Actilum RGB is a company specialising in the field of research, design and manufacture of LED backlighting solutions. We spoke to its manager, Demián Ezequiel Epsztein.

How was Actilum RGB created?
The company was born in Barcelona thanks to the curiosity and interest in new technologies of its two partners, a computer scientist with finance studies and an electromechanic with commercial experience. Today, we are a company focused on the LED backlight industry and dedicated to the research, design and manufacture of LED products. Our headquarters are located in Barcelona, we have three industrial buildings where the technical office and the departments of production, commercial advice, administration, marketing, electronic design and machinery development are located. Internationally, we have representatives in the European Union and Latin America.

How would you define the philosophy of Actilum RGB?
Our aim is to provide efficient solutions in the world of LED backlighting. To do this, we focus on the requirements of our customers’ projects to ensure that our work brings them value and distinction. That’s why we transform market weaknesses into our strengths, moving from generic, off-the-shelf products (which offer no technical support or customisation) to products created for this sector, tailored to customers and market needs. In practice, this implies continuous progress, both through research with new technologies and through the improvement of our own products, something we achieve thanks to a team of professionals from different areas and to working together with the leading brands of LED components, allowing us to be at the technological forefront.

What does Actilum RGB offer?
We design, create and manufacture elements for the backlighting of advertising images and products, as well as producing a large part of the machinery necessary for their manufacture. In recent years, due to the need for differentiation on the part of brands, we have created an exclusive area dedicated to the development and manufacture of products based on their special needs. We know that offering a good service to our customers is a must, that is why we have several multidisciplinary professionals who adapt to their needs, guaranteeing flexibility, personalised technical advice and support in each of the projects they carry out.

On the other hand, our star product, Luxpanel, is the made-to-measure LED backlighting panel manufactured entirely in Spain. It is less than 8 millimetres thick and is capable of illuminating all types of surfaces with optimum homogeneity and faithful colour reproduction. Luxpanel was created to adapt to all kinds of needs, which is why it is configurable in size, thickness, shape, shade and light power. It is also more efficient and consumes less than conventional LED technology. What’s more, it is easy to install and its surface does not emit heat.

What role does innovation play in day-to-day business?
R&D work, in addition to providing efficiency and quality, is an essential requirement for a future and a present in a market that is constantly evolving. This is why a large part of our resources are allocated to the people who make up the development and production departments, in addition to optimising the production line.

Solution to current spike when activating LED lights with soft start

When we activate an LED system, a current spike is triggered in the first few milliseconds.

 

In this short time, the power supply is faced with the task of building up the load and supplying the necessary power.

 

This initial phenomenon can create stresses in the system, affecting its stability and sometimes causing unwanted outages.

 

Gradual start-up

To address this challenge, a key solution has emerged: LED soft-start systems.

 

Unlike conventional ignition that requires immediate power delivery, this approach adopts a more gradual strategy.

Shape of the Gamut

Using a hue and saturation graph allows you to visualize how colors are distributed in terms of hue and saturation. This graph is crucial for understanding how colors are perceived in different lighting conditions.

 

 

How to Interpret the TM30?

The TM30 is visually represented by a pie chart, making it easy to interpret its measurements.

 

In this graph:

The black circle represents the reference light, typically sunlight.

 

The red circle represents the light being measured.

The relative position of the red circle to the black circle is critical to interpreting the results

 

  • Red circle inside black: Indicates that the colors are desaturated under the measured light.

What is the electromagnetic radiation spectrum?

Transformation through Light

The spectrum is a classification that allows electromagnetic waves to be ordered according to their energy.

 

This spectrum ranges from radio waves, low energy, to gamma rays, high energy, including between these extremes the light visible to humans, ultraviolet radiation (UV) and infrared radiation (IR).

Measurement and characteristics of sunlight

Sunlight, a primary source of energy and light for the planet, is measured using the unit of length called the nanometer (nm), which is equivalent to one billionth of a meter.

 

A spectrometer is the technical instrument used for this measurement, allowing light to be broken down into its spectrum and the different wavelengths that make it up to be analyzed.

 

The visible light range, which extends from 380 nm to 730 nm, is where the human eye can perceive light. In this segment, the wavelengths associated with the colors green, yellow and amber are the ones most easily detected by the human eye, reflecting a greater luminous flux in this part of the spectrum.

 

The importance of adjacent radiations

Beyond the visible spectrum, we find ultraviolet (UV) radiation below 380 nm and infrared (IR) radiation above 730 nm. Although these types of radiation are not visible to humans, they have important applications in science and technology.


UV radiation, for example, has applications in medicine, disinfection and chemical analysis, while IR is essential in heating systems, communications and sensor technology.

 

Characterization of LED light

LED lighting technology has gained popularity due to its energy efficiency and long lifetime. However, the spectrum of light emitted by conventional LEDs has distinctive characteristics, such as a high peak in the blue region of the spectrum.


This peak is the result of the way photons are generated in the LED’s semiconductor material.

Peak in the Blue Region (around 450 nm): Blue light is fundamental for photosynthesis as it helps promote vegetative growth. This peak indicates that Actilum luminaires are designed to provide sufficient blue light to stimulate robust growth in microgreens.

 

Peak in the Red Region (around 650-700 nm): Red light is essential for flowering and fruit development, but in the case of microgreens, it is also important for photosynthesis and overall growth. This peak ensures that the plants receive the necessary red light to complement the effect of blue light.

 

Infrared Light (700-800 nm): The spectrum in the range of 700 nm to 800 nm, known as infrared light, significantly influences the development of microgreens. Infrared light helps promote controlled elongation of their stems. This is essential to ensure they reach an adequate height for harvest, facilitating better light exposure and optimizing their development. Infrared light also contributes to the regulation of other growth processes, improving the quality and uniformity of the microgreens, which is important for their commercialization and consumption.

 

Intermediate Region (500-600 nm): Although green and yellow light are not as effective in photosynthesis as blue and red light, they are important for balanced lighting and ensuring that plants grow uniformly. This spectrum shows a balanced distribution in this region, contributing to homogeneous growth.

Color Temperature (5300K): The color temperature of 5300K falls within the range of cool white light, which is beneficial for plant growth as it simulates natural daylight.

What is Power Factor?
